Microsoft has confirmed a known issue affecting Windows 11 version 24H2 systems that install the August 29, 2025 non-security preview update (KB5064081) or subsequent releases. The problem prevents certain applications from playing Digital Rights Management (DRM)-protected video content or handling live TV display and recording functions.
Users report black screens, system freezes, and repeated playback interruptions. Microsoft attributes these symptoms to applications that rely on the Enhanced Video Renderer with HDCP enforcement or DRM for digital audio. The Health Dashboard website now states:
Problems playing protected content in some BluRay/DVD/Digital TV applications
Some apps are unable to display or record live TV or play Digital Rights Management (DRM) protected content.
Streaming Services Remain Unaffected
The bug does not impact major video streaming platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, or HBO Max. Instead, it targets legacy media applications that deal with Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital TV playback.
Enhanced Video Renderer, a component of MediaPlayer and IMFMediaEngine, is central to the issue. Microsoft has replaced this legacy technology with Simple Video Renderer (SVR), but some third-party applications continue to depend on the older framework. Microsoft has not disclosed which specific applications are affected.
Microsoft states it is actively working on a resolution. The company plans to deliver the fix through a future Windows update and will publish additional details when they become available.
As a temporary workaround, you can try to play your media with some other app, or uninstall the problematic update.
