Windows 11 Settings App Adds New “App Updates” Page That is Tied to Windows Update

Microsoft is developing a new feature in Windows 11 that aims to simplify how users manage application updates. A new "App updates" page made its appearance in the Setting app on latest Windows 11 preview build. There, you can manage updates for certain Store apps that can receive new versions via Windows Update.

The new page displays the status of available app updates and shows when the system last checked for them. It includes a prominent “Check for updates” button and configurable options to adjust update behavior. Although the interface is visible, current testing indicates the functionality remains incomplete. Clicking the update button produces no response, suggesting the feature is still a work in progress.

Which apps are supported

The update mechanism applies only to applications that opt into Windows Update as their delivery channel. This mostly applies to apps integrated with the Windows ecosystem, including certain built-in and business-oriented software. Traditional Microsoft Store apps will continue to receive updates through the Store application itself as usual.

So, the feature does not replace the Microsoft Store but offers an alternative update method for environments where the Store is unavailable. For example, it is good for  systems restricted by administrative policies or those with the Store manually uninstalled.

Microsoft's long-term goal is creation of a unified, intelligent orchestration platform capable of coordinating all update types, including apps, drivers, and OS components, alongside standard Windows updates. The change is a step in this direction.

Note: Users should not expect this new Settings page to manage third-party applications installed outside Microsoft’s ecosystem unless those apps explicitly support Windows Update.
