Windows 11 Photos App gets AI-Powered Auto-Categorization

Microsoft has released a new update to the Photos app for Windows 11, now rolling out across all Insider channels. The Photos app version 2025.11090.25001.0 can automatically organize photos into categories using a dedicated AI model.

The latest version of the Photos app leverages artificial intelligence to automatically sort images into predefined categories. Users will find their collections organized into these folders:

  • screenshots,
  • receipts,
  • identity documents,
  • and notes.

How Auto-Categorization Works

The AI model analyzes visual content to assign each photo to the appropriate category. It recognizes handwritten notes, printed documents, receipts, and official identification without relying on text-based metadata.

Language does not limit the system’s recognition capabilities. For instance, a passport issued in Hungary appears under the “Passport” category regardless of the document’s language.

Users can access categorized photos through the left navigation pane or via the search bar. The app also allows manual reassignment of categories and accepts user feedback to refine future sorting accuracy.

Additional Updates

This release expands availability of the Super Resolution feature to Copilot+ PCs powered by Snapdragon, AMD, and Intel® processors. Users will receive a prompt to download the required model package upon first use.

Auto-Categorization is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs and currently supports only the four designated categories. To access these features, users must update the Photos app to version 2025.11090.25001.0 or higher through the Microsoft Store. The update is actively rolling out and may not appear immediately for all users.
