Microsoft has revealed that they officially allows using Windows 11 on Macs with Apple M1 and M2 processors with help of Parallels Desktop 18. In fact, Mac users have been able to use it in this way for long, but now there is an official guide for that. And this is the only way to run Windows 11 on a device with an Apple Silicon processor.
The document also mentions some limitations in running Windows 11 in a virtual environment on top of macOS. In this case, the system will not support features that require nested virtualization. These include:
- Windows Subsystem for Android
- Windows Subsystem for Linux
- Virtualization-based security
- Windows Sandbox
Also, the company does not guarantee the satisfactory performance and compatibility level for DirectX12 and OpenGL3.3. Finally, ARM32 apps will not work on Mac at all. The latter will be discontinued in Windows 11 in the near future.
As an alternative, Microsoft suggests using the Windows 365 OS streaming. A Windows 11 instance running in the Azure cloud will be cast to the user's device. This option may be interesting for customers, but an average consumer may have no interest in it.
