Microsoft is developing a tool to easily migrate to a new Windows 11 PC. Traces of it can be found in the latest Windows 11 Insider build 22635.4945, released for the Beta channel. The famous researcher "phantomofearth" on X uncovered an early-stage application designed to simplify the process of transferring data from an old computer to a new one.
The tool itself is a work in progress. There is nothing to try right away. However, there are parts of the GUI that give the idea how it will look.

Another X user, a_donglee, managed to create mockups to illustrate what the final application might look like and the capabilities it could offer. Here's how it looks.
According to these designs, the tool will likely serve two primary purposes:
- Creating a backup copy of the current device
- Assistance in transferring files from an old computer to a new one.
So the app will be useful for folks who is upgrading their systems.
The data transfer process appears to rely on proximity and network connectivity. Both devices must be near each other and connected to the same Wi-Fi network for the operation to work. Once these conditions are met, the user will need to pair the computers by entering a one-time OTP (One-Time Password) code on the target PC.
Before proceeding, the application will prompt the user to confirm their intention to transfer data to the selected computer, ensuring security and preventing accidental transfers.
It’s worth noting that the images shared so far are unofficial mockups created by enthusiasts based on fragments of the user interface and other scattered details. So keep in mind that the final design and features of the app may differ significantly from these representations. Microsoft is known for iterating on its tools during development, so may expect drastic changes.
Given its early stage of development, it’s unlikely that this application will be released anytime soon. However, Microsoft may start testing the new app with Windows Insiders in the coming months
This will allow the company to gather feedback and refine the experience before a broader rollout. For now, the discovery sheds some light on Microsoft's plans to enhance the user experience for those transitioning to a new Windows 11 device.
