Microsoft is testing a new AI-powered search feature in the latest Dev build for Windows Insiders. The new feature uses semantic analysis to help find the files you need based on even the vaguest of search queries. The new feature will only work on Copilot+ PCs devices, as it requires a neural processing unit (NPU).
It is designed to simplify the search for documents, photos, and settings in the operating system. However, it is is currently limited to files in certain formats, including JPEG and PNG images, PDF, TXT documents, and XLS spreadsheets.
According to the Redmond software giant, you no longer have to remember file names, exact words in their content, or settings. You can describe what you need to find by using your own words. Terms like “sunset bridge” for images, “European trip budget” for documents or “change my theme” for Windows Settings will do the trick.
The feature will use NPU built into a Copilot+ PC to work offline without connecting to the could.
Microsoft also notes that the search will only work for those folders and files that the user has allowed for indexing. This can be configured through the menu "Settings" - "Privacy and security" - "Search in Windows". You can also enable the "Advanced" mode to index all the contents of the computer. In the future, the function will also support cloud search, for example, in OneDrive.
Currently, only Insiders using Copilot+ PC devices with Snapdragon ARM processors can evaluate the AI-powered search. It is included in build 26120.2992 for the Dev channel. Support for AMD and Intel chips will be added in upcoming builds.
