Windows 11 Build 27959 (Canary) Allows Changing Hardware Indicator Positions

Microsoft has released Windows 11 Build 27959 to Windows Insiders in the Canary channel. It adds several improvements and features new to the channel. Here are the details.

Advertisеment

Recently, the branch name from which builds are released changed to BR_RELEASE. This is due to internal operating system development cycles. The Windows Insider team treats these builds the same as builds from the RS_PRERELEASE branch. However, due to the branch change, some features have been temporarily removed from Windows 11 Insider builds. Microsoft plans to bring them back in the future. BR_RELEASE builds do not represent any feature update for Windows 11.

New features

Configuring the location of hardware indicators on the screen

In this build, Microsoft added the ability to move the brightness, volume, Airplane mode, and virtual desktop indicators to a different location on the screen. Both the current location at the bottom and new options are supported: in the upper-left corner and in the top-center position.

Changes and improvements

Input

  • Added a new keyboard shortcut to make it easier for you to insert an En dash (–) or Em dash (—) while typing anywhere in Windows. Going forward, pressing WIN + Minus (-) will insert En dash, and WIN + Shift + Minus (-) will insert Em dash. Note – if you have Magnifier running, WIN + Minus (-) will still zoom out Magnifier, rather than inserting an En dash.

Share dialog

  • Added the ability to pin your favorite apps to the system Share window.

Other

  • Some dialog boxes have been updated to better match the Windows 11 style. In particular, the dialog box that appears when an application fails to start has been updated.

Fixes

General

  • Fixed an issue where some Insiders on ARM64-based PCs were experiencing a bug check with the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error.

File Explorer

  • The "Open with" section of the File Explorer context menu that appears when you right-click a file has been updated. The accent color underlay under packaged application icons (such as the Snipping Tool) has been removed. This makes the icons larger and more visible.

  • Some changes have been made to improve the performance of opening files from cloud storage using File Explorer and the speed of loading context menus.
  • Fixed an issue where icons and text could overlap on the desktop when using increased text scaling.
  • Fixed an issue where icons in the Details, Preview, and Navigation areas of File Explorer would display incorrectly when using Arabic or Hebrew as the display language.

Taskbar and system tray

  • Fixed an issue seen in previous builds where the battery icon might be out of sync with the actual charging state (for example, showing the device as not plugged in when it was actually plugged in).
  • Fixed an issue where clicking an application thumbnail on the taskbar would close the application but not bring the application window to the foreground.

Start Menu

  • Fixed an issue where the Start menu would close when attempting to take a screenshot of it using the WIN + Shift + S shortcut .

Display and graphics

  • Fixed an issue where content in apps and browsers could become partially frozen on the screen while other maximized or full-screen apps were refreshing in the background. This could be particularly noticeable when attempting to scroll, as only certain parts of the content would be refreshed.

Windows Hello

  • Fixed an issue where setting up a Windows Hello PIN could fail with error code 0x80090010 on devices joined to an Entra domain.

Voice access

  • Fixed an issue where Voice Access might not work, displaying error 9001.

For developers

  • Fixed an issue where the PIX on Windows utility could not play GPU recordings on this OS version. This issue has been resolved in the latest version of PIX.

Windows Security

  • Fixed an issue where apostrophes in some text in the application were displayed incorrectly.

Known issues

Power and battery

  • [New] Investigating reports that some Insiders are experiencing sleep and shutdown issues after installing the latest Canary builds.
