Windows 11 Build 27842(Canary) introduces a new style of BSOD

Microsoft has released Windows 11 Build 27842 to Insider program participants using the Canary channel. The update continues roll-out of the colorful battery icons in the tray, a new style of BSOD, and includes several security fixes.

Changes and improvements

General

  • Improved battery icons introduced in Build 26120.3000 may not be available to Windows Insiders. We've started re-rolling this change.Battery Iconography
  • Microsoft is introducing a new design for the screen that appears when the operating system crashes. The new BSOD/GSOD interface better matches the style of Windows 11 and is aimed at getting users back to work faster. The interface has been simplified, but technical information is still displayed on the screen.
    This change will gradually roll out to Windows 11 Insiders on version 24H2 (and later) in the Beta, Dev, and Canary channels. New Bsod Style Unexpected Restart Screen Green

Windows Security

  • Changes to the Windows Security app have begun rolling out. It will now display additional information, such as the manufacturer and version of the Pluton TPM chip, if your PC has one. You can find this information under Device security > Security processor details.

Other

  • Removed support for the Visual Studio Graphics Analyzer shader debugging feature. Attempting to use this feature may crash Visual Studio or your analysis session. The company recommends using alternative tools such as  PIX for D3D12 or RenderDoc.
  • Microsoft has removed the bypassnro.cmd script to improve the security and usability of Windows 11. The change ensures that after the initial Windows setup phase, all users have an internet connection and a Microsoft account.

Fixes

General

  • Fixed an issue where the "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" toggle was not displayed correctly and would sometimes turn off on its own.
  • Fixed an issue resulting in some Insiders experiencing a GSOD with the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR error when performing various actions on their PC.

Taskbar and system tray

  • Fixed an issue that affected the stability of explorer.exe in previous builds.
  • Fixed an issue where after using a Win + T keyboard shortcut, the arrow keys would point in the wrong direction on an Arabic or Hebrew system.

Administrator protection

  • Fixed an issue where after enabling Administrator Protection, the lsass.exe process could create increased CPU usage, impacting performance.

Input

  • Fixed a crash in ctfmon.exe that could affect the ability to enter text.
  • Fixed an issue where in recent flights DWM would crash when attempting to use a pen to ink, potentially causing users to see a black screen for a while.

Login screen

  • Updated the web login icon to better match the other icons in the login options menu.

Windows Security

  • Fixed an issue where the Smart App Control icon in the Windows Security app was not displayed correctly.

Display and graphics

  • Fixed an issue where the system would sometimes fail to detect external graphics cards connected via Thunderbolt.
  • Fixed an issue where some JPG images could not be displayed, although they could be viewed in older builds.
  • Fixed an issue where sometimes you had to use the Win + P shortcut twice to switch projection mode.

Other

  • Fixed an issue where the IP Helper Service would not start in previous builds. This could cause some apps to stop working.
  • Fixed an issue that caused midisrv.exe to crash in previous builds.
  • Fixed an issue where the Run dialog would not display the autocomplete list if you started typing a file path.

Known issues

General

  • [Important note for Copilot+ devices] If you are upgrading to the Canary channel from the Dev, Release Preview, or Stable channels on a Copilot+ device, you will encounter an issue using your PIN or biometrics when attempting to sign in. You will see the error "Something went wrong, your PIN is not available" with the code 0xd0000225. To reset your PIN, click the "Set up PIN" button.

Xbox Controllers

  • Some Insiders have encountered an issue where using an Xbox controller via Bluetooth causes a GSOD. To resolve the issue, open Device Manager, select View > Devices by Driver. Find the driver named oemXXX.inf (XboxGameControllerDriver.inf) in the list, where XXX is the device number on your computer. Right-click it and select Uninstall.

Taskbar

  • Working to fix an issue where taskbar icons don't expand as much as they should when using your PC in tablet mode.
