Windows 11 Build 26200.5518 (Dev) introduces taskbar icon auto-scaling

Microsoft has released a new preview of Windows 11, Build 26200.5518 (KB5054687), to Insiders in the Dev channel. This update introduces a new taskbar feature - icon auto-scaling. When the taskbar is full, Windows can now make the app icons smaller to fit more of them. Besides, it includes the new colorful battery icon, a file share panel (drag tray) at the top of the desktop, and much more.

Advertisеment

As a reminder, the Dev channel has moved to builds with numbers 26200. This means that the ability to switch from the Dev channel to Beta will close after installing build 26200.5510. If you have not yet switched to the Beta channel, but want to do so, then when build 26200.5510 appears in the Windows Update Center, you can pause receiving updates, switch the channel, and resume updates.

Builds numbered 26200 are based on Windows 11 version 24H2 and will include many of the features and improvements available in Beta Channel builds 26120. Over time, developers will begin making behind-the-scenes changes to the platform, which may cause the known issues to differ from Beta Channel builds.

New features

Taskbar icon scaling

Microsoft has begun testing taskbar icon scaling. This improvement ensures that you can quickly access more apps, even when the taskbar is full. When the taskbar starts to fill up with pinned or open apps, the icons will automatically become smaller, allowing you to see more icons and potentially eliminating the need to open the taskbar overflow menu.

Taskbar Scaling

The developers understand that users may have different preferences for how this feature works, so you can customize it to your liking:

  • When the taskbar is full. By default, the icons on the taskbar will automatically shrink when the taskbar is full. This will help keep more apps accessible without any extra steps.
  • Never: If you prefer that icons always stay the same size, no matter how many apps are open, you can turn off the shrink icon feature.
  • Always If you like the way the small icons look and want them to always stay that way, you can force small icons to be enabled permanently.

To adjust the scaling options for taskbar icons, right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select "Taskbar settings". In the window that opens, expand the "Taskbar behavior" section and select the desired option for "Show smaller taskbar buttons".

Simplified file sharing

Microsoft is introducing a new way to share files quickly and easily. When you drag a local file using your mouse or touch from File Explorer or the desktop, a special area will appear at the top of the screen with a list of apps you can send the file to. If you select More (…), the familiar Share dialog box will open.
