Advertisеment

You may remember that the Dev channel has moved to builds with numbers 26200. This means that the ability to switch from the Dev channel to Beta will close after installing build 26200.5510. If you have not yet switched to the Beta channel, but want to do so, then when build 26200.5510 appears in the Windows Update Center, you can pause receiving updates, switch the channel, and resume updates.

Builds numbered 26200 are based on Windows 11 version 24H2 and will include many of the features and improvements available in Beta Channel builds 26120. Over time, developers will begin making behind-the-scenes changes to the platform, which may cause the known issues to differ from Beta Channel builds.

New for PC Copilot+

Improved Windows Search

Local Semantic Search

On devices with the Copilot+ PC label and AMD and Intel processors, finding documents, photos, and settings is simplified thanks to the introduction of "Enhanced Windows Search," which is based on semantic models in addition to traditional lexical indexing.

Whether you're searching in File Explorer, the search box on the taskbar, or Settings, just type what you think to find it on your PC. No more remembering file names, exact words in document content, or setting names.

Fe Semantic Search

With over 40 TOPS of performance from the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) built into Copilot+ PC devices, improved search is available even without an internet connection.

In Settings > Privacy & Security > Windows Search, you can specify which folders should be indexed on your PC. There, you can also enable the Advanced mode to index all data on your PC.

Taskbar Semantic Search

Currently, searching for settings, such as "change my theme," only works inside the Settings app. In future builds, you’ll be able to search for settings using the search box on the taskbar.

Settings Semantic Search

Improved search works in Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish. Supported file formats: .txt, .pdf, .docx, .doc, .rtf, .pptx, .ppt, .xls, .xlsx for documents and .jpg/.jpeg, .png, .gif, .bmp, .ico for images.

For detailed information on how semantic search works on Copilot+ PCs, please refer to the documentation at this link.

Improved cloud photo search

Also, on devices with the Copilot+ PC label with AMD and Intel processors, it’s easier to search for photos in the cloud storage. You can use natural language queries in the search bar in the upper-right corner of File Explorer to find photos in the cloud by describing their content, for example, "European castles" or "summer picnics."

In addition, photos from the cloud will now be displayed in search results along with images saved on your local computer. You will also find exact matches for your keywords in the text of your cloud files in the results.

The feature only works with personal OneDrive cloud storage. To try out the improved search, you need to sign in to a Microsoft account and have an active Internet connection. If you sign in to OneDrive with a work or school account (Entra ID), then in the search results you will only see matches by keywords in the texts of cloud files. Third-party cloud storage will also be able to implement support for improved Windows search, documentation is promised to be published later.

Improved search features are gradually rolling out to Windows Insiders on Copilot+ PCs, so they may not be available on your device yet.

Note: You may need to restart your computer 1-2 times to get the "Improved Windows Search" feature.

New features

Speech Recap feature for Narrator

Microsoft has introduced a new feature called Speech Recap that will allow you to track what Narrator has said and quickly access it for reference. With simple keyboard shortcuts, you can quickly access spoken content, follow the transcription in real time, and copy what Narrator last said.

Speech Recap 1

You can open the Speech Recap window by pressing Narrator key + Alt + X and find the last 500 lines spoken by Narrator. Note that the text in this window is updated each time you launch Narrator. You can use standard reading commands and arrow keys to read the contents of the Speech Recap window and copy the text you need for reference.

Need to save or share what Narrator said? You can instantly copy the information without opening the Speech Recap window. Use Narrator key + Ctrl + X to copy the last spoken phrase to the clipboard.

Other scenarios where you can use Speech Recap and its associated keyboard shortcuts:

  • referring to the prompt you heard when opening a new window;
  • copying the spoken error code;
  • adding the phrase "Screen Narrator" to the training materials.

Speech Recap 2

Narrator's real-time transcription is useful for assistive technology (AT) instructors, teachers of visually impaired students (TSVI) who support students in the classroom, and hearing-impaired professionals who want to use Narrator. To see Narrator's real-time transcription, use the same Narrator key + Alt + X shortcut to open the Speech Recap window and pin it to the part of your screen where you want to see it. You'll be able to see Narrator's real-time transcription as you perform tasks.

These keyboard shortcuts follow a simple pattern, making them easy to remember:

  • Ctrl + Win + Enter = Turn on/off "Narrator";
  • Narrator key + X = Replay what Narrator last said;
  • Narrator key + Ctrl + X = Copy what Narrator last said;
  • Narrator key + Alt + X = Open Speech Recap window for history and real-time transcription

Changes and improvements

General

    • Microsoft is introducing a new design for the screen that appears when the operating system crashes. The new BSOD/GSOD interface better matches the style of Windows 11 and is aimed at getting users back to work faster. The interface has been simplified, but technical information is still displayed on the screen.
      This change will gradually roll out to Windows 11 Insiders on version 24H2 (and later) in the Beta, Dev, and Canary channels.

Copilot for Windows

    • Now you can launch Copilot for Windows using the Win + C keyboard shortcut. You can reassign the Copilot key and Win + C keyboard shortcut at any time in Settings > Personalization > Typing > Customize the Copilot key on your keyboard.

If no speech is detected within a few seconds, Copilot will automatically end the conversation. Once the conversation is finished, the microphone icon displayed on the screen will disappear.
      As previously announced, you can use Alt + <Space> to talk with Copilot. Press to talk lets you interact with Copilot using your voice using a hotkey so you can get instant answers while staying in your current workflow and without interrupting your tasks.
      Press to talk is supported in the latest update to the Copilot app (version 1.25033.139.0 or later), which is available to Insiders in all channels in the Microsoft Store.
    • Developers can use the same trigger for the Press to Talk feature in their apps that support the Copilot key using Handle Microsoft Copilot hardware key state changes. Note that the Microsoft 365 Copilot app for enterprise does not yet have this support.
    • Win+C support and Press to Talk are rolling out in stages, so not all Insiders will see the change.
