Passwordless Improvements

Microsoft has collaborated with 1Password to integrate a seamless passkey provider experience into Windows 11. This feature allows users to securely store and use passkeys through a plugin-based credential manager, using an intuitive setup process:

  1. Install the beta version of 1Password on your Windows 11 device.

  4. Once enabled, you can either use existing passkeys stored in the plugin credential manager or create and save new ones.

To use a saved passkey, visit a website that supports them and select the appropriate passkey from your credential manager. You can then sign in quickly using Windows Hello.

You can also generate new passkeys by visiting a supported site, choosing the option to create a passkey for your account, selecting to save it to your credential manager, and authenticating via Windows Hello. Once created, the key is securely stored for future use.

Developers of third-party credential managers are encouraged to integrate their services with Windows 11 to enhance the passkey experience for users. Further technical documentation is available at this link.

Voice Access

Support for Japanese language input via Voice Access has been temporarily suspended to allow further refinement of functionality and resolve outstanding issues.

Settings

In addition to previous enhancements introduced in Build 26120.4151 related to browser defaults in the European Economic Area, this update ensures that the selected default browser will be pinned to the Taskbar and Start menu unless the user opts out by clearing the relevant checkboxes.

Fixes Gradually Rolling Out to Beta Channel (Toggle Enabled)

File Explorer

  • Resolved an issue that could cause File Explorer’s Home view to crash, potentially preventing the application from launching properly since Home is the default view.
  • Fixed a problem where thumbnails for pinned favorites in the Home view might disappear unexpectedly.

Start Menu

  • Addressed a problem causing duplicate entries to appear when interacting with folders in the Start menu interface.
  • Corrected an inconsistency affecting folder expansion animations, which were not rendering correctly in certain scenarios.

Input

  • Fixed a critical bug involving the ctfmon.exe process, which had been impacting typing performance in recent Beta Channel flights.

Other

  • Resolving a memory leak that occurred when the lock screen was configured to display a slideshow. This issue could degrade system performance over time.
  • Enhanced the system's ability to handle increased text scaling within dialogs. For example, the message "You must restart your computer to apply these changes" should now scale correctly without distortion.

Known Issues

General

  • Updated: When joining the Beta Channel on Windows 11 version 24H2, users will no longer be offered Build 26120.4250 first. Instead, they will receive the most up-to-date build currently available in the Beta Channel.
  • Updated: Some Beta Channel users may encounter a rollback during installation, accompanied by error code 0x80070005 in Windows Update. Working on a resolution. As a temporary workaround, affected users may attempt to fix the issue by navigating to Settings > System > Recovery > Fix issues using Windows Update.

Start Menu

The following known issues affect Beta Channel users utilizing the new Start menu:

  • Touchscreen navigation may not function reliably; for instance, the swipe-up gesture is currently unsupported.
  • Drag-and-drop functionality between "All Apps" and "Pinned" sections remains limited.

Xbox Controllers

  • Some users are encountering a bugcheck (GSOD) when connecting an Xbox controller via Bluetooth. To resolve this, open Device Manager, click View > Devices by Driver, locate the driver named oemXXX.inf (XboxGameControllerDriver.inf) (where XXX corresponds to your specific device), right-click it, and choose Uninstall.

Click to Do (Preview)

  • Beta Channel users on AMD or Intel™-based Copilot+ PCs may experience extended delays when attempting intelligent text actions in Click to Do after installing a new build or model update. These issues will be addressed in upcoming releases.

AI Actions in File Explorer

  • Narrator scan mode may not function correctly when reading bulleted lists in the Summarize AI action results window for Microsoft 365 files. A recommended workaround is to press Caps Lock + Right Arrow for improved navigation.

Widgets

  • Until full pinning support is implemented in the new Widgets board experience, attempting to pin widgets will revert the interface to the previous implementation.
