What's new in Windows 11 Build 26120.3653 (Beta)

Quick machine recovery (QMR)

Quick machine recovery (QMR) is part of the Windows Resiliency Initiative announced at Ignite 2024 and is now available in the latest build of the Windows Insider program.

When enabled, the feature will fix common boot issues on Windows 11 devices by automatically detecting and applying fixes directly from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), thereby reducing system downtime and the need for manual intervention.

If there is a critical failure while booting the OS, the device will enter the WinRE environment, connect to the Internet, and send diagnostic data to Microsoft. The company can then deploy targeted fixes via Windows Update.

Microsoft strongly recommends that IT administrators enable, configure, and test this feature. It is worth noting that it is enabled by default in Home editions.

Windows Insiders can already test QMR and share their feedback through the Feedback Hub app.

A test patch is expected to be released in the coming days, which will allow you to test the Fast System Restore feature in practice.

Speech Recap feature for Narrator

Microsoft has introduced a new feature called Speech Recap that will allow you to track what Narrator has said and quickly access it for reference. With simple keyboard shortcuts, you can quickly access spoken content, follow the transcription in real time, and copy what Narrator last said.

You can open the Speech Recap window by pressing Narrator key + Alt + X and find the last 500 lines spoken by Narrator. Note that the text in this window is updated each time you launch Narrator. You can use standard reading commands and arrow keys to read the contents of the Speech Recap window and copy the text you need for reference.

Need to save or share what Narrator said? You can instantly copy the information without opening the Speech Recap window. Use Narrator key + Ctrl + X to copy the last spoken phrase to the clipboard.

Other scenarios where you can use Speech Recap and its associated keyboard shortcuts:

  • referring to the prompt you heard when opening a new window;
  • copying the spoken error code;
  • adding the phrase "Screen Narrator" to the training materials.

Narrator's real-time transcription is useful for assistive technology (AT) instructors, teachers of visually impaired students (TSVI) who support students in the classroom, and hearing-impaired professionals who want to use Narrator. To see Narrator's real-time transcription, use the same Narrator key + Alt + Xshortcut to open the Speech Recap window and pin it to the part of your screen where you want to see it. You'll be able to see Narrator's real-time transcription as you perform tasks.

These keyboard shortcuts follow a simple pattern, making them easy to remember:

  • Ctrl + Win + Enter = Turn on/off "Narrator";
  • Narrator key + X = Replay what Narrator last said;
  • Narrator key + Ctrl + X= Copy what Narrator last said;
  • Narrator key + Alt + X= Open Speech Recap window for history and real-time transcription

Changes and improvements

General

  • Microsoft is introducing a new design for the screen that appears when the operating system crashes. The new BSOD/GSOD interface better matches the style of Windows 11 and is aimed at getting users back to work faster. The interface has been simplified, but technical information is still displayed on the screen.
    This change will gradually roll out to Windows 11 Insiders on version 24H2 (and later) in the Beta, Dev, and Canary channels.

Copilot for Windows

  • Now you can launch Copilot for Windows using the Win + C keyboard shortcut. You can reassign the Copilot key and Win + C keyboard shortcut at any time in Settings > Personalization > Typing > Customize the Copilot key on your keyboard.
  • To activate Press to Talk and start a voice conversation with Copilot in Windows, press and hold the Copilot key or Win + C for two seconds. To end, press Esc. If no speech is detected within a few seconds, Copilot will automatically end the conversation. Once the conversation is finished, the microphone icon displayed on the screen will disappear.
    As previously announced, you can use Alt + <Space> to talk with Copilot. Press to talk lets you interact with Copilot using your voice using a hotkey so you can get instant answers while staying in your current workflow and without interrupting your tasks.
    Press to talk is supported in the latest update to the Copilot app (version 1.25033.139.0 or later), which is available to Insiders in all channels in the Microsoft Store.
  • Developers can use the same trigger for the Press to Talk feature in their apps that support the Copilot key using Handle Microsoft Copilot hardware key state changes. Note that the Microsoft 365 Copilot app for enterprise does not yet have this support.
  • Win+C support and Press to Talk are rolling out in stages, so not all Insiders will see the change.

Click to Do

Click to Do is currently available as a preview to Windows 11 version 24H2 Insiders in the Dev and Beta channels on Copilot+ PC devices.

  • On Copilot+ PC devices, you can now launch Click to Do from the Start menu. The icon can be pinned to the Start menu or taskbar.

  • Click to Do now has a text action for creating a bulleted list. The action is available in English, Spanish, and French. The feature is only available on Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon processors. Support for Copilot+ PCs with AMD and Intel chips is coming soon.
  • Microsoft has released policies to govern how Click to Do works in enterprise environments. Detailed information can be found here.

Share dialog

  • Now when you send links or web content through the Share window, a preview of the content will be displayed.
  • The Share window now allows you to quickly edit and enhance images before sending. Editing features such as cropping, rotating, and applying filters are supported. You can also compress the image to reduce the file size. The feature only works for local images stored on your computer. Supported image formats: .jpg, .jpeg, .dib, .png, .tif, .tiff, and .bmp.

Known issues

General

    • [Reminder] When you join the Dev and Beta channels, you will be offered Windows 11 24H2 Build 26120.3360. Once you install it, you will be on the latest build. The two-step update to get the latest build is a temporary mechanism.
    • After resetting the system settings in Settings > System > Recovery, the build number may change to 26100 instead of 26120. This will not affect receiving future updates on the Dev channel, which will fix the issue.

Recall

    • [Reminder] Be sure to update your Microsoft 365 apps to the latest version so you can get back to certain documents.
    • Some Insiders may be experiencing an issue where Recall is unable to automatically save photos, and the feature cannot be enabled in Settings. Working to fix the issue.
    • Recall can be enabled or disabled in the "Turn Windows features on or off" section. At the moment, Recall files remain on the disk even after the feature is disabled. In future updates, these files will be completely removed from the system.

Click to Do

    • [Reminder] Intelligent text actions now use local suggestion and response moderation instead of a cloud-based solution. Since intelligent text actions are now fully local, they are now available in Click to Do in Recall.
    • [Reminder] If some actions with objects in images are not displayed, check for updates to the Photos and Paint apps in the Microsoft Store.
    • Sometimes, intelligent text actions based on Phi Silica may provide unnecessary context. This issue will be fixed in future Windows Insider builds.

Improved search

    • [Reminder] To improve the Windows Search experience on Copilot+ PC devices, it is recommended that you connect your computer to a power source to complete the initial indexing. You can check the search indexing status in Settings > Privacy & Security > Windows Search.

File Explorer

    • We're working on a fix for an issue where the Home page in File Explorer crashes for some Insiders. If you launch File Explorer with a different folder (such as through Search or the Run dialog), you'll be able to navigate your folders.

Task Manager

    • After adding the new "CPU Load" column, you may notice that the load for the "System Idle" process is always 0.
    • The CPU graphs on the Performance page still use the old CPU usage calculations.

Widgets

    • [New] Insiders in the European Economic Area (EEA) who have access to customize widgets on the lock screen may notice that the Weather widget may be temporarily unavailable.
