Windows 11 Build 22635.4950 (Beta) adds Share bar, Grid and Category view to Start menu

Microsoft is releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.4950 (KB5052078) to the Beta Channel. The update is only available to users who didn't set their settings to get 24H2 Insider releases. and applies to version 23H2. The release comes with significant UI improvements, and adds a Share bar to the top of the screen, making sharing your files much easier and convenient. Besides, the Start menu now supports the Grid and Categories views for the "All apps" page.

New features

Simplified file sharing

Microsoft is introducing a new way to share files quickly and easily. When you drag a local file using your mouse or touch from File Explorer or the desktop, a special area will appear at the top of the screen with a list of apps you can send the file to. If you select More (…), the familiar Share window will open.

Start Menu

Microsoft is introducing two new views for the All apps page in Start: Grid and Categories. The Grid or List view will display your apps in alphabetical order.

This change is being rolled out in stages, so you may not see it on your PC right now. Microsoft plans to begin rolling out the feature to Insiders in the Dev and Beta channels running Windows 11 version 24H2 soon.

Fixes

File Explorer

    • This update includes expanded support for text scaling in File Explorer, the Open and Save dialog boxes, and the file copy dialog box. Text scaling is configured in Settings > Ease of Access > Text Size.
    • Fixed an issue where the Home page in File Explorer might not load correctly and display random floating "Name" text.

Taskbar

    • Fixed an issue where the corners of application thumbnails on the taskbar might be drawn with the wrong corner radius.

Settings

    • Fixed an issue for Japanese users where the name displayed at the top of Settings > Accounts was shown in the format "Firstname Lastname" instead of the expected "Lastname Firstname" format.

Known issues

Start Menu:

These issues only apply to the new Table and Categories views:

    • [New] Sometimes after installing an app, there is a delay in displaying app icons in the Table and Category views.
    • [New] When right-clicking an application, the "Start Menu Settings" context menu appears momentarily before the application's context menu appears.
    • [New] Windows tool related applications are split into folders instead of being in one place.

File Explorer

    • Engineers are investigating an issue where File Explorer closes very slowly for some Insiders when they click the X button in the title bar. This issue may also affect other buttons in the title bar.

Settings

    • There is a known issue where two new cards specific to enterprise devices, Device information and Ease of Access settings, appear on unmanaged PCs signed in with a Microsoft account.
