Beta channel insiders are now getting  Windows 11 Build 22635.4010 with several improvements and fixes made to the taskbar, and an updated Paint.

The new features are available to Insiders with the "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" toggle turned on.

Changes and improvements

Taskbar and system tray

Microsoft has resumed testing a simplified system tray, where the date and time are displayed in abbreviated form, and the notification bell icon is displayed depending on the Do Not Disturb status.

Showing a Jump List when hovering over inactive app icons on the taskbar can now be disabled. Insiders who have access to this change can now turn it off by going to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar Behavior.

Updated Paint

Microsoft has released the latest Paint app update (version 11.2406.36.0) to Windows Insiders in the Beta and Release Preview channels, which brings the following improvements:

  • Switch to Eraser mode using the top pen button. Users can now quickly switch from the current tool to the Eraser by pressing the top pen button.
    • You can also flip the pen over and use the top part as an eraser.
  • Switch to the Lasso Tool with the Side Button of the Pen. If you need to select an arbitrary area on the host, you can now press the side button of the pen to switch to the Lasso tool. The cursor must be in the working area.

Fixes

Taskbar

Fixed a recent issue where pressing the Shift key while right-clicking an application icon in the taskbar would open another instance of the application instead of the expected menu. Also fixed an issue where pressing the Shift key while right-clicking an application icon in the taskbar would sometimes cause explorer.exe to crash.

Task Manager

Fixed an issue where the dropdown menu at the top of the GPU page under Performance was not using the dark theme even when it was enabled.

Known issues

Taskbar

There is an issue causing explorer.exe to crash for some Insiders when closing apps from the taskbar.

File Explorer

Insiders in the Beta channel who have access to the updated Recent, Favorites, and Shared sections on the File Explorer home page may encounter the following issues:

  • Keyboard focus may be lost when selecting an unselected tab.

Input

Engineers are working on a fix for an issue where the emoji panel would close when trying to switch to the Symbols or Kaomoji sections after selecting an emoji.

  1. An option to reduce the height of the Taskbar!

That is what is needed, and people have been asking Microsoft for it ever since Windows 11 came out. Why is it so difficult?
