Starting July 17, Microsoft is releasing Windows 11 23H2 to users with eligible devices who manually check for updates. This means that the OS won't yet be installed automatically or forcibly. But if you check for updates manually, you will get it.
This way, Windows 11 23H2 will be installed on machines running any previous Windows 11 release. But it must be a device not managed by Active Directory, i.e. a consumer device. Such devices run Home and Pro editions of the OS.
Windows 11 23H2 was released in September 2023. It is notable for deeper AI integration here and there, including the new Windows Copilot assistant. For the first time in its history, Windows natively supports RAR and 7Z archives, and several other formats. The full list of changes is here: What's new in Windows 11 23H2.
If you a consumer interested in migrating on the latest OS, navigate to Settings > Windows update, and click Check for updates.
Microsoft is offering Windows 11 23H2 to a wider audience, as 21H2 and 22H2 releases are reaching the end of support in coming three months. After that date, eligible devices will be forcibly updated to 23H2. The older Windows 11 versions will no longer be maintained and serviced by Microsoft.
