Windows 10X is no longer exclusive to foldable devices. Microsoft officially confirms that the new edition of the OS will become available on traditional laptops and 2-in-1 convertible devices.
Microsoft's Panos Panay confirmed that change.
With Windows 10X, we designed for flexibility, and that flexibility has enabled us to pivot our focus toward single-screen Windows 10X devices that leverage the power of the cloud to help our customers work, learn and play in new ways. These single-screen devices will be the first expression of Windows 10X that we deliver to our customers, and we will continue to look for the right moment, in conjunction with our OEM partners, to bring dual-screen devices to market.
So, the rumors we recently covered are now confirmed. Also, Microsoft Emulator now allows you to select a large single-screen device, along with a device which comes with a single small screen.
This also means that the Surface Neo dual-screen device with Windows 10X pre-installed is no longer set for a 2020 launch.
Surface Neo is Microsoft's very own foldable PC, which comes with a detachable keyboard, Surface Slim Pen inking. It will feature two 9” screens connected by a 360° hinge.
Windows 10X supports classic Win32 (desktop) apps via containerization, where every Win32 app will run in the same container. Most of the Win32 apps are supported by that container with a few limitations, such as a missing notification area (system tray).
The official announcement also mentions that Microsoft is actively working on improving the OS for working, learning, and playing. However, there were no details revealed on what exactly Microsoft is working on.
