The next major update for Windows 10, due to release in the second half of this year, will bring tons of new features to the touch keyboard. Windows Insiders can already test some of those improvements, such as GIF support, the updated emoji panel, enhanced visuals, etc. Speaking of visuals, it looks like Microsoft has a few more personalization options coming soon to Windows Insiders.
In the latest Windows preview builds, users managed to find a new folder called "touchkeyboard." The folder contains several background images with the light and dark theme options. Although there is no official word from Microsoft regarding the purpose of that folder, it is safe to assume those are the default images users will be able to set as the touch keyboard background.
The ability to set an image as a keyboard background is not a new concept. In fact, Microsoft's own SwiftKey keyboard for mobile devices had such a feature long before Microsoft acquired SwiftKey in 2016. Microsoft uses SwiftKey technologies to improve touch input in the operating system.
Now, it looks like the company is ready to bring more customization features to touch keyboard in Windows 10. Currently, the only personalization option is the ability to switch between the dark and light themes. Using the images in the "touchkeyboard" folder, users will be able to set pre-defined pictures matching dark and light themes for even more customization.
Enthusiasts also managed to find references to other unannounced features. According to their findings, Microsoft is working on additional capabilities, such as variable keyboard scale and key color personalization, the ability preview changes, and revert everything to the original state.
There is no information on when these exciting new features will arrive in Windows Insiders. Be on the lookout for the next Windows 10 preview builds. Microsoft has already released the first but minor feature update for Windows 10 this year, and now we can expect it to share more information on what is coming soon.
