Windows 10 Redstone 2 and Redstone 3 will arrive in 2017

Microsoft has officially revealed some details about the roadmap for upcoming Windows 10 updates. Windows 10 Anniversary Update, which is just released, was the first wave of "Redstone". Two more big updates are planned for 2017.

The Redmond giant officially stated this in their blog post.

Windows 10, version 1607 is our third Windows 10 feature update released. Based on feedback from organizations moving to Windows 10, this will be our last feature update for 2016, with two additional feature updates expected in 2017.

This means Microsoft is planning the next feature update in early 2017. It is codenamed "Redstone 2". The second major update is also scheduled for 2017. It is codenamed "Redstone 3".

So, 2017 seems to be a special time for all Windows 10 users. It is not clear yet what new features exactly we will get from upcoming updates. One interesting feature of the Redstone 2 update is expected to be Task Continuation which will allow users to start a task on one device and then resume and finish it on another. Also, Redstone 2 will continue to evolve to Action Center, Microsoft Edge, Windows Update, Cortana and may also add some integration with Office 365 services. There were rumors of many different features. Live Tiles are likely to become chaseable meaning you can click them to directly open the content they show and not always open the homescreen of the app. Cortana is expected to become a system-wide assistant as she gains more smart capabilities. Some apps already have integration with Cortana. Action Center might get support for widgets or cards, offering quick snapshots of data, synced across your Windows 10 devices.

  1. Who is familiar with the TV Series “Person of Interest”? Windows 10 telemetry actually makes it possible to have a “machine” that is comprised of millions of computers, tablets, cell phones, and other devices that will know EVERYTHING about 7 in 10 of all people.

  2. “Cortana is expected to become a system-wide assistant as she gains more smart capabilities.”

    Skynet anyone?

Anyways, I hope they plan on doing a performance overhaul, as well. Windows 10 really needs it. I even have a high-end system and at times I can see Windows 10 drag behind.
