Windows 10 S is the new edition for Windows 10 with the big difference from regular editions being that it does not have Win32-app support: you can only install apps that are available in the Windows Store. Microsoft says this change allows it to greatly improve and enhance the security of the OS. Win32 apps converted using Project Centennial (Desktop app converter tool) may run on Windows 10 Cloud though. It is not possible to download and install apps from outside of the Windows Store.
Windows 10 S is designed specially for Microsoft’s education customers. It is a lightweight version of Windows 10 which takes less than 5 seconds to start up from the hybrid shutdown state.
Windows 10 will come with a "Set-up School PCs" feature made for schools. It will let them make a configuration for a PC and store it on a USB stick. Later, the user can just plug that stick into a PC running Windows 10 S to automatically start configuring the device based on the USB drive contents.
Finally, it will be possible to upgrade Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Home or Pro with a special license key if the hardware supports traditional versions of Windows 10. The price details regarding the upgrade key are not disclosed yet.
Windows 10 S looks clearly like a competitor to Google's Chromebook devices, which have become quite popular these days. Microsoft's goal is to get Windows 10 more widely adopted on different types of devices.
