As you may already know, Windows 10 version 1709, the next feature update, is officially named Fall Creators Update. However, for many parts of the world, this name is not suitable. Microsoft decided to change it for a number of countries.
Not all countries experience the fall season during September, which is when Microsoft has scheduled the release of version 1709. For countries like Australia and New Zealand, winter ends around that time and spring begins. For India, it is usually the monsoon season in September and autumn begins in mid to late October. For UK, Autumn is in September. So accordingly, Microsoft has decided to change the name of the update depending on the region. Right now, the regional web site of Microsoft UK shows the following advertisement.
As of this writing, there is no indication that this OS update will be rebranded globally. It is likely to retain its original branding in countries like USA, Canada and others.
Microsoft has referred to Windows 10 version 1709 as Fall Creators Update for quite a long time now. The change of name can be very confusing for customers who are already used to the existing name. Now, there will be confusion because the same update will have different names in different regions of the world.
What do you think about this name change? Which name do you like more? Should Microsoft change the Fall Creators Update moniker at all? Tell us in the comments.

We Australians can cope with Americanisms such as “Fall”, but we roll our eyes at the American ignorance of the southern hemisphere seasons. Stateside it might be Fall or Autumn in the UK or whatever, but it is Spring Downunder and while they’re having a white Christmas, we’re having heatwaves and bushfires. If they are so worried about being ‘PC’ maybe they should go to a 3rd quarter, 4th quarter, etc. naming scheme.
I think it would have been easier for Microsoft to just give it another name rather than one which can be interpreted differently around the world. Now they’ve given themselves extra work in having to localize two names for the update for no actual benefit.
Ideally I’d prefer it if it was called what it actually is, which would be Windows 10.4 given the three prior major updates to Windows 10. Of course that wouldn’t fit the narrative that Microsoft pushes which is that there is only ever one Windows 10… despite the fact that the release Windows 10 is significantly different enough to the current release that you even have store apps that WILL NOT RUN unless it’s fully updated to the latest version of Windows 10. So [censored] their marketing.
I would prefer Oktoberfest. 1709 is close enough.
