Windows 10 20H2 and 1909 will reach end of service in May

Microsoft reminds its consumers and customers that two versions of Windows 10, 20H2 and 1909, will hit end of service on May 10, 2022. Version 1909 is already officially supported in the enterprise area only. It has already expired for the Home and Pro editions and has near 2% of the market share among consumers.

Windows 10 20H2 still holds 12% of market, but Microsoft is on the way to update it to Windows 11 for eligible devices. If your device doesn't meet the strict requirements of the newest OS, it will get the latest Windows 10 version 21H2.

The latter will appear in Windows Update if you manually search for updates in the Settings app.

Version 20H2 will reach end of service on May 10, 2022 for Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations editions.

In fact, three recent versions of Windows 10, i.e. 2004, 20H2, and 21H2 share the same code base and have the same set of files. Microsoft only issues small "enablement packages" to activate the appropriate features and functions. Upgrading to 21H2 will be fast and smooth, as it doesn't even include any major change. You won't lose anything by switching to the last release of Windows 10.

Windows 11 is a different story. It's a full build upgrade that makes you retrain your muscle memory. It has some controversial changes like the taskbar that you cannot move to any screen edge besides the bottom one. You cannot enable text labels for taskbar buttons. The new Start menu no longer has Live Tiles, and File Explorer no longer has the Ribbon UI. Some users may not welcome such drastic changes.

  1. I just wait for the final feature update for Windows 10, which probably a new build (hope so) composed of some features backported from Windows 11.
