Thunderbird closed a 25-year-old request to have a native tray icon notification

Thunderbird finally closes a 25-year-old request to add a new mail notification icon to the mail client. An indicator notifying of new mail via an icon in the system tray was requested for Thunderbird in November 1999.

Thunderbird closed a 25-year-old request

The developers eventually closed this ticket, implementing it using the StatusNotifierItem protocol, originally developed by the KDE project (support in GNOME is implemented via an extension). The new feature is coded in Rust, while the most of the code is in C.

Note that the recent release of Thunderbird 128 ESR doesn't include the new feature.

On July 11, 2024, the free cross-platform application for managing email and news feeds Mozilla Thunderbird 128.0 ESR, codenamed Nebula, was released. It is based on Firefox 128 ESR and is a long-term support version.
