Thunderbird 136.0, a community-driven email client based on Mozilla technologies, has been officially released. This version is built on the Firefox 136 codebase and represents an intermediate release, with updates scheduled to be delivered prior to the next major version. Additionally, Thunderbird 128.8.0 has become available in the Extended Support Release (ESR) branch, which offers long-term support and receives updates throughout the year.
The launch of Thunderbird 136.0 marks a shift in the project's release strategy. In addition to annual major releases tied to Firefox ESR branches, monthly major releases will now align with standard Firefox updates. Previously, builds based on stable non-ESR Firefox releases were noted as experimental, featured warnings in their release notes, and were not prominently listed on the download page.
Advertisеment
Thunderbird 136.0 removes this testing-only label, making it the default release for users. The development and maintenance of Thunderbird ESR branches will continue unchanged.
This new approach accelerates feature delivery, smooths transitions between versions by distributing changes over time, and expands the scope of bug fixes included in each update. Notably, the ESR branch remains focused on addressing vulnerabilities and critical issues.
