The Home folder of File Explorer gets tabs with Recent, Favorites and Shared files

Microsoft is working on a new variant of the Home folder, the default location of File Explorer in Windows 11. The layout of the contents is slightly reworked, with the middle Favorites section to become a tab next to the Recent section. Finally, there will be a new Shared tab.

So in the near future, the Home page of File Explorer will receive an updated design. It is a work in progress, so the feature is hidden in Windows 11 Build 22635.3640 (Beta). Also, even when enabled with ViVeTool, it has minor issues. For example, when switching between the tabs, the animation only works if there is no content in the sections.

If you want to try this change now, you can manually enable it using the ViVeTool utility by following the steps below.

Enable new Shared section and tabs in File Explorer Home

  1. Download the ViVeTool from here.
  2. Unpack the downloaded archive to the c:\vivetool folder.
  3. Open a Terminal as Administrator, for example, by pressing Win + X and selecting Terminal(Admin).
  4. In the command prompt or PowerShell, type the following command c:\vivetool\vivetool /enable /id:45130483 and press Enter.
  5. Restart your computer to apply the changes.

You are done. Now open File Explorer, say with the Win + E shortcut. You will see the updated layout.

To disable the new style of the Home folder, use the following undo command:

c:\vivetool\vivetool /disable /id:45130483

Run it as Administrator, and restart the computer to apply the change.

That's it!
