Surface Duo will soon get Android 12L along with Samsung and Lenovo devices

Android 12L is a special version of Android for dual screen devices. Google Vice President of Android Engineering Andrei Popescu announced it is coming to Microsoft, Samsung and Lenovo  devices later this year.

Apparently, Microsoft is planning to release Android 12L for its Surface Duo 2 foldable smartphone, and Lenovo will update its P12 Pro tablet to this version of the operating system.

As for Samsung, Android 12L is available for every Galaxy Tab tablet, and Z Fold smartphones can also benefit from switching to this version of the OS.

Android 12L comes with a ton of improvements for the large screen UI. To name a few, there are changes in Notification center and Settings. Also, it adds a taskbar that allows you to quickly switch between open apps and makes it easier to switch to split-screen mode.

You may remember that last month, Microsoft finally released Android 11 for the original Surface Duo device after a long period of promises.  Sadly, by that time Android 12 was already the actual version of the OS. But the Redmond firm didn't plan to release that version of its Surface Duo devices.

The announcement made by Google reveals the reason behind that move, pointing that Microsoft aims to ship the foldable device-optimized version of Android. However, it is not yet clear whether both generations of Surface Duo devices will receive this update, or whether it will become exclusive to the second version of the device.

Google says that improvements and new features of Android 12L will later become available in regular Android versions, starting with Android 13 (via Google)
