After releasing the August 2021 firmware update for Windows-based Surface devices, Microsoft moves to its only gadget running Android, Surface Duo.
What is new in the August 2021 firmware update for Surface Duo?
Not much. And no Android 11 in sight, although Microsoft promised to release Android 11 for Surface Duo somewhere “this Summer.” While other Android-based smartphones prepare for the upcoming Android 12 release, Surface Duo remains stuck on aging Android 10. Moreover, the August 2021 firmware update for Surface Duo does not bring any device-specific bug fixes and improvements, which the device still desperately needs. All it brings is monthly security patches for the Android OS.
The August 2021 firmware update is available for all Surface Duo versions on all markets:
- 721.41 is available for users in North America (unlocked versions).
- 721.42 is available for devices bought from AT&T (locked versions).
- 721.43 is available for European users (unlocked versions).
You can find the Surface Duo update history on the official Microsoft support website. Unfortunately, you will not find much there, as the update contains just security patches for Android 10. Interestingly, this is a second update for Surface Duo without bug fixes and device-specific improvements.
Despite the fact that Microsoft provides somewhat weak support for its sole Android device, rumors claim the company is on track to release the second-gen version of Surface Duo. Recently, a prototype of Surface Duo 2 appeared on the Internet, revealing a much improved triple rear-facing camera. For now, there is no information on when Microsoft plans to announce or release Surface Duo 2.
