Stop Windows 10 from sharing updates over your Internet connection

Windows 10 has a special option which is able to use your internet connection's bandwidth to deliver updates to other computers! When enabled, it acts like a torrent seeder, using the user's PC to share files it downloaded with other Windows 10 users. Here is how to stop it.

When this feature is active, Windows 10 can announce that your computer has received updates from Windows Update. Once the announcement reach other computers with Windows 10, they will start downloading those files from your PC instead of Microsoft's servers to reduce the load on their servers.

However, upload speeds are limited in many countries and have a data cap/limit as well. If you are not happy that Windows 10 will use your internet connection to deliver updates to other users like a torrent client, then you need to disable this option in Windows Update's settings.
Here is how.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to Update & Security -> Windows Update.
  3. There, click the link Advanced options on the right.
  4. On the next page, you need to click the link Choose how updates are delivered:
  5. Finally, on the next page you need to disable the option Updates from more than one place:

That's it. Once disabled, Windows 10 will not seed downloaded Windows Update packages like a torrent box.
What do you think about this feature? Are you happy with this behavior of Windows 10 or do you find it unacceptable?

  1. Spying on people is never acceptable. They are SELLING the data in the US according to their ads on TV (which have disappeared over the last month)

    We have become the product

  2. @Rick – this feature has nothing to do with spying. The telemitry in Windows 10 is a completel separate issue. Also, prove that the data obtains via Windows 10 is actually sold. Show us the evidence.

STOP F* ING PARROTING SH~ LIKE YOU’RE AN ENLIGHTENED REVOLUTIONARY. It’s juvenile.

    1. Telemetry data is too valuable to be sold to other companies – Microsoft uses it for own profit, that’s how they to battle Google’s waste data advantage.
Ever since 2008 everyone is losing their head to juice out extra revenue everywhere they can – it’s like silicon valley was overrun by GOP
