How to Share Page URL via QR Code in Microsoft Edge Chromium

After Google Chrome, Edge has received the ability to generate a QR code for the URL of an open page. The generated QR code will encode the open page URL. It is possible to read the generated ID with a compatible device, e.g. with your phone's camera, and share the URL between devices quickly.

The QR code generator is now available in Edge Chromium Canary, which is shares the Chromium 84 code base, which includes the appropriate option. Now both browsers share the same feature.

The browser ships with a flag that allows enabling QR code creation. It is still a work in progress as of this writing, so it is not enabled by default. If you are enthusiastic enough to try it in action, here is how to get it. The steps below assume that you have installed the latest Edge Canary (see the version list below).

To Enable QR Code Generator in Microsoft Edge,

  1. Update Microsoft Edge to the latest build.
  2. Open Edge, and type the following text in the address bar: edge://flags/#sharing-qr-code-generator.This will open the flags page directly with the relevant setting.
  3. Select the option Enable from the drop-down list next to the 'Enable sharing page via QR Code' line.
  4. Restart Edge by closing it manually. You can also use the Restart button which will appear at the very bottom of the page.
  5. You are done.

Here is how to use the generator.

To Share Page URL via QR Code in Microsoft Edge Chromium,

  1. Right-click on an open web page in the browser.
  2. Select Generate QR code for this page.
  3. You will see this:
  4. Now you can read this code with your smartphone.

You are done. If this feature becomes available in the stable branch of Edge, it will be very handy.

Microsoft Edge is now a Chromium-based browser with a number of exclusive features like Read Aloud and services tied to Microsoft instead of Google. The browser has already received a few updates, with support for ARM64 devices in Edge Stable 80. Also, Microsoft Edge is still supporting a number of aging Windows versions, including Windows 7, which has recently reached its end of support. Check out Windows Versions Supported by Microsoft Edge Chromium and Edge Chromium latest roadmap. Finally, interested users can download MSI installers for deployment and customization.

For pre-release versions, Microsoft is currently using three channels to deliver updates to Edge Insiders. The Canary channel receives updates daily (except Saturday and Sunday), the Dev channel is getting updates weekly, and the Beta channel is updated every 6 weeks. Microsoft is going to support Edge Chromium on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10, alongside macOS, Linux (coming in the future) and mobile apps on iOS and Android. Windows 7 users will receive updates until July 15, 2021.
