Today I would like to show you how you can open the Lock Screen as a regular Modern/Metro app in Windows 10. When you open it this way, the Lock Screen app runs inside a window so it doesn't really lock your PC, it's just a fun trick. Let's see how it can be done.
Some time ago Winaero covered how you can create a shortcut to any Modern app and run it directly without using the Start screen or Start Menu to launch it. The same trick can be used to open the Lock Screen as a regular Modern app! Follow the instructions below.
- Press Win + R shortcut keys together on the keyboard to open the Run dialog.
Tip: See the ultimate list of all Windows keyboard shortcuts with Win keys. - Type the following in the Run box:
explorer.exe shell:AppsFolder\Microsoft.WindowsDefaultLockScreen_8wekyb3d8bbwe!LockApp
- Press Enter and you will see the Lock screen running on your Desktop! It will act like a regular app, however, the font will be fugly Comic Sans:
Now you can create a shortcut for the command mentioned above to execute the Lock screen with just one click.
That's it! (AppID via h0x0d).
Note that this works only as of build 9860 of Windows 10 Technical Preview, not in the older build 9841.
