Windows 10 comes with a new Universal app, Photos. It adds a new context menu item for images. It is called "Edit With Photos" and launches the UWP app. If you are not going to use Photos for that purpose, you might find it useful to get rid of the context menu command. Here is how.
Microsoft has included a new, Universal Windows Platform app "Photos" instead of the good old Windows Photo Viewer. The Photos app is set as the default image viewer app. Photos can be used to browse, share and edit your photos and your image collection. If you are not happy with Photos, see how to restore the classic Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10.
To remove the Edit With Photos context menu in Windows 10, do the following.
- Open Registry Editor (see how).
- Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppX43hnxtbyyps62jhe9sqpdzxn1790zetc\Shell\ShellEdit
Tip: You can access the desired Registry key with one click.
- On the right, create a new string value named "ProgrammaticAccessOnly".
- This will remove the command from the context menu. Before:
After:
Alternatively, you can hide it and show only in the Extended context menu. Extended context menu commands are not visible in the normal mode unless you press and hold the Shift key on the keyboard while right clicking. Here is how to move Edit With Photos to the extended menu.
To move Edit With Photos in the extended context menu, do the following.
- Open Registry Editor (see how).
- Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppX43hnxtbyyps62jhe9sqpdzxn1790zetc\Shell\ShellEdit
Tip: You can access the desired Registry key with one click.
- On the right, create a string value named "Extended".
This will hide the command from the context menu. To see it, press and hold the Shift key on the keyboard and then right-click any folder in File Explorer. The command will appear.
The regular context menu:
The extended context menu:
To save your time, you can use Winaero Tweaker. Under Context Menu\Remove default entries, untick the item "Remove Edit With Photos" and you are done!
You can download the app from here:
I also made ready-to-use Registry files which you can download below. The ZIP archive includes both tweaks mentioned above along with the undo tweak.

Hmmm, I haven’t seen this context menu entry. I’m using Windows 10 with Creators Update.
I am using the Insider Preview build of Fall Creators Update, it shows me the item.
Microsoft these days make such bloated context menus. Having all three ‘Edit’, ‘Edit with Photos’ and ‘Edit with Paint 3D’ is too much. In a perfect OS everything would be customizable and 3rd party apps would not be restricted to customize UI too.
Thanks Sergey! Happy to get rid of this entry now.
You are welcome Jose.
Restore “Edit with Photos” with registry file is not working
I have tested it several times and it was working.
Which build you are running?
version 1703 (build 15063)
It is for Fall Creators Update, 16226+
I was looking for a program to remove unwanted items from the Windows’ right click context menu. Winaero is works to remove a few default ones but it doesn’t detect entries from third party software. For example, I have Dxo OpticsPro installed on my system and now it has put itself on the top of the context menu for many image file types and I am looking for a way to remove it. Unfortunately, it’s not noted in Winaero. IS there a solution for to remove these entries?
Yep. It is called Nirsoft ShellExView. Here you go: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
Also, see http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shell_menu_view.html
These will solve your issue.
