The latest Mozilla Firefox shows sponsored ads on the tiles which you see on the New Tab page. If you have used the Opera 12 browser in the past or used recent Firefox Nightly builds, you won't be very surprised that ads are now in your browser's user interface! If you can't tolerate these ads, here is a simple and effective method to get rid of them.
Mozilla added these tiles with ads to decrease their revenue dependence on Google, who was their primary revenue source for many years. Google search was the default engine in the Firefox browser as part of Mozilla's agreement with Google. Now, Mozilla has chosen to not renew the partnership with Google, so as an alternative source of revenue, Mozilla has decided to place ads on the New Tab page.
Mozilla claims that these new tiles with ads do not compromise your privacy, i.e. they are not used to track your activity or collect any information by third parties. However they may still not be tolerated by some users.
To get rid of tiles with ads, do the following:
- Open the New Tab page in Firefox:
- Click the grey gear icon in the top right corner to show its menu:
- Choose "Classic" option there.
You are done. When you select the Classic option, Firefox will only display websites from your browsing history on the New Tab page. Note that the tiles which already display ads won't be proactively removed (at least they didn't disappear in my case). You will have to remove them yourself.
Alternatively, instead of Classic, you can set it to Blank, but then the New tab page becomes blank which is less useful.
What do you think about these Firefox ads? Can you tolerate them or have you disabled them immediately after installing Firefox?
