Microsoft has released a new version of PowerToys, their all-in-one toolbox for adding extra features to Windows 10 and 11. Actually, version 0.61.1 is a quick patch over version 0.61 that resolves an issue with the start menu shortcut.
After upgrading to PowerToys 0.61 you will notice that all its Start menu shortcuts are missing. So version 0.61.1 resolves this issue and also fixes a bug that fills event log with crash reports when you click the PowerRename context menu in Windows 11.
The major changes are all in the PowerToys 0.61 release. They include quality of life improvements for Always on Top, FancyZones and PowerToys Run.
Here are the important updates to note.
- The new Windows 11 context menu entries are now correctly added to Windows 11 dev channel insider builds.
- The old context menu entries are shown alongside the new Windows 11 context menu entries to be compatible with software that overrides the Windows 11 context menu behavior.
- Removed deprecated Segoe icon glyph codes and replaced them with the correct ones.
- Always on Top: Fixed border flickering when activating.
- Always on Top: Fixed black edges appearing on rounded corners.
- Always on Top: Fixed a bug that was causing 100% CPU consumption.
- FancyZones: ixed a bug that caused layouts to not be applied correctly when many monitors reported having the same serial number, and for virtual displays.
- FancyZones: A "Rows" default layout is now applied to vertical monitors, instead of a "Columns" layout.
- PowerToys Run: Improved performance by saving the search history files only on exit.
There are also other fixes and minor changes here and there, as carefully noted on GitHub.
Also, it is important to mention that this release comes with a few known issues. The new Windows 11 context menus only appear after you restart the OS. Also, some third party apps like RTSS RivaTuner Statistics Server and MSI AfterBurner may prevent you from opening PowerToys settings.
You can download the most recent PowerToys release from Microsoft Store and GitHub. Existing users will get an update notification.

I’ve stopped updating PowerToys. Always something wrong with it. Now I’m not sitting on Windows, but if I am, I’m running v0.37.2 for Windows 10 and v0.53.3 for Windows 11. I know they work well for me.
