Updates for Windows 10

Changes in Windows 11 24H2, Build 26100.6584 (KB5065426)

Gradual roll-out

Recall

  • Recall now opens to a personalized home page that brings your recent activity and most-used apps and websites to the forefront, making it easy to pick up where you left off. Once screenshot collection is enabled, the home page highlights key productivity features like Recent Snapshots, which shows your most recent snapshots to help you quickly resume tasks, and Top Apps & Websites, which shows the three apps and websites you’ve used most in the last 24 hours. You can customize filters in Settings to control which apps and websites are saved in Snapshots. A new navigation bar on the left side of the screen gives quick access to Home, Timeline, Feedback, and Settings.

Click to Do

  • When you first launch Click to Do, you’ll see a quick, interactive tutorial. It shows you how to complete tasks faster, demonstrating actions on both text and images - like summarizing large blocks of text or removing the background of images. To run the tutorial again, click More options… > Start tutorial.

General

  • Updated the design of privacy dialogs for granting permissions to apps. When an app requests access to your location, camera, microphone, etc., a system dialog will appear on the screen. When these dialogs appear, the screen will dim slightly and the dialog will be centered on the screen.

Taskbar

  • The larger clock and seconds now appear again in Notification Center above the date and calendar. To enable this option, go to Settings > Time & Language > Date & Time and turn on Show time in Notification Center.
  • Fixed an issue where accidentally clicking or moving the mouse over an app thumbnail on the taskbar would cause the thumbnail to become unresponsive.

Search on the taskbar

  • Content on the left side of the taskbar search results window can now be displayed in a grid to help you find the image you're looking for faster.
  • Search on the taskbar now provides clearer status information. If your search results are incomplete while your PC is organizing files in the background, Windows will display a notification with a link to check the progress. You can dismiss this notification. The status for files and folders is also displayed so you can easily determine whether they are available online (in the cloud) or stored on your device.

Lock screen

  • Previously, this feature was only available to Windows Insiders in the European Economic Area (EEA). Now, Microsoft is ready to offer more widget options for the lock screen, and is also adding support for the feature to Insiders in all regions. You can now add, remove, and rearrange widgets like Weather, Sports, Traffic, and more on the lock screen. You can also add any widget that supports the shrink feature. To customize the widgets on the lock screen, go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.

File Explorer

  • Added separators to the buttons that appear at the top or bottom of the Explorer context menu.Input
  • If you're signed in with a work or school account (Entra ID), File Explorer displays people icons in the Activity column and in the Suggested section at the top of File Explorer Home. Hover over or click a person's icon to open the Microsoft 365 Live Persona card, which shows who the person is and how they're related to the file.
  • Fixed an issue where attempting to unlock a file in its Properties would still cause it to appear locked the next time the Properties window was opened.

Windows Hello

  • As part of the expanded access key features released in September 2023 , you'll see a redesigned Windows Hello experience. This visual update provides fast and clear communication across a variety of authentication experiences, including the Windows sign-in screen, access keys, Recall, Microsoft Store, and more.
The Windows security credentials experience for access keys offers a cleaner, more intuitive design designed to support fast and secure sign-in. You can now easily switch between authentication options, such as access keys or connected devices.
  • Fixed an issue where Windows Hello might recognize your face on the sign-in screen, but authentication would still fail and prompt you to enter a PIN. If you continue to have issues, you'll need to go to Face Recognition in Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and select Improve recognition.
  • Fingerprint login after exiting standby mode has become more stable.

Settings

  • Updated Windows activation and expiration dialogs to match the visual style of Windows 11. These dialogs now appear as Windows toast notifications, prompting you to take action if needed. We've also improved the wording in Settings > System > Activation.
  • You can now go to  Settings > Privacy & Security > Text & Image Generation to see which third-party apps have recently used the generative AI models provided by Windows. This page also lets you control which apps are allowed to use generative AI models, giving you full control over how AI works on your device.
  • The AI agent in Settings on Copilot+ PCs helps you quickly find and change settings. Initially, the feature was only available on Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon processors. Now, the agent has been extended to support Copilot+ PCs based on AMD and Intel. Please note that the feature only works if the system's primary interface language is English.
  • Fixed an issue where Settings might crash when trying to add a security key in Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.

Task Manager

  • Task Manager now uses standard metrics to display CPU usage, which is consistent with industry standards and third-party tools. For backward compatibility, a new optional CPU Usage column is available on the Details tab (hidden by default), displaying the previous CPU value used on the Processes page.

Widgets

  • Added support for multiple dashboards so you have more space to display your favorite widgets while still staying up-to-date with current events around the world with the News Feed. You can switch between dashboards, like My Feed and other integrated dashboards, using the navigation bar on the left side of the screen. This feature was previously only available to Insiders in the European Economic Area (EEA).
  • The Widgets panel has been redesigned to provide an organized, personalized, and engaging feed. Additionally, the feed will feature articles curated by Copilot, giving you a multi-faceted view of a single topic as Copilot combines summaries, videos, and images from trusted MSN premium publishers.

Windows Backup for Organizations

  • Windows Backup for Enterprise is now available . It offers a seamless transition between devices with enterprise-grade backup and recovery. Whether you’re upgrading your organization’s fleet of devices, moving to Windows 11, or adopting AI-powered PCs, this solution helps you maintain productivity with minimal disruption, ensuring business continuity and organizational resilience.

PowerShell 2.0

  • Starting in August 2025, Windows 11 version 24H2 will no longer include Windows PowerShell 2.0. This legacy component was introduced in Windows 7 and was officially deprecated in 2017. Most users will not be affected by this, as newer versions like PowerShell 5.1 and PowerShell 7.x remain available and supported. If you use older scripts or tools that depend on PowerShell 2.0, update them to avoid compatibility issues.

Live Captions

  • Fixed an issue where changing the opacity of live subtitles in Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles > Subtitle Style did not work.

dbgcore.dll

  • Fixed an internal issue with dbgcore.dll that could cause some applications, including explorer.exe, to crash.

Kerberos

  • Fixed an issue where Kerberos could fail when attempting to access a cloud file share.

  • Fixed some internal issues that could result in a blank white screen or a "wait a minute" screen appearing for several minutes when logging in.

Miracast

  • Fixed an issue where audio playback would stop a few seconds after starting to broadcast to your TV on some devices.

Audio

  • Fixed a hang in the core audio service that could affect the ability to play audio in some cases.

Cryptographic Provider

  • Fixed an issue that caused error code 57 and the text "The "Microsoft Pluton Cryptographic Provider" provider was not loaded because initialization failed" to appear in the Event Viewer after system boot.

Device Management

  • Fixed an issue where some System Restore features would not work correctly due to a temporary file sharing conflict. This affected certain device management tools and broke key functionality on some devices.

File system

  • Fixed an issue with Resilient File System (ReFS) where using apps to back up large files could sometimes cause all system memory to be exhausted.

Input

  • Fixed an issue with the Chinese (Simplified) Input Method Editor (IME) where some extended characters would display as empty squares.
  • Fixed an issue where touch keyboard input using the Changjie, Bopomoji, or Japanese IME would not work if you switched to using the previous version of the IME.

Performance

  • Fixed an issue affecting installation files of some applications on PCs with ARM64 architecture, due to which the installation process could hang for a long time.

Application Compatibility

  • Fixed an issue that caused non-administrator users to receive unexpected User Account Control (UAC) prompts when performing certain custom actions in MSI installers. This could occur during application setup or repair.
This issue could prevent non-administrator users from running applications that perform MSI repair, including Office Professional Plus 2010 and some Autodesk products (such as AutoCAD). This fix reduces the number of scenarios that require a UAC prompt for MSI repair and allows IT administrators to disable UAC prompts for specific applications by adding them to the allow list.

File server

  • This update adds the ability to audit the compatibility of SMB clients with the SMB Server and SMB Server EPA signature. This allows customers to assess their environment and identify any potential device or software incompatibility issues before deploying hardening measures that are already supported by the SMB Server. Detailed instructions are provided in the CVE-2025-55234 bulletin.

Input

  • Fixed an issue where some applications would stop responding to input when using certain input methods.
  • Fixed an issue where some Internet Information Services (IIS) modules would disappear from IIS Manager, preventing users from configuring IIS through its interface.

Network connections

  • Fixed an issue that affected audio in applications using Network Device Interface (NDI). Audio would be interrupted when Display Capture was enabled in OBS Studio. This issue may occur after installing KB5063878.
