After introducing Live Photo support for OneDrive on iOS, Microsoft is ready to show some love to Android. OneDrive for Android version 6.23 is now available with 8K video and Samsung’s Motion Photos support.
Although very few devices support 8K playback – not to mention recording such a video – on the latest Samsung flagships you can now upload 8K videos to OneDrive. The file size will not be a problem because Microsoft recently increased the size limit from 100GB to 250GB per file.
Do note that 8K video upload in OneDrive works only on Samsung Galaxy S20 and S21. You can manually upload these videos or enable automatic camera upload. If you try to play a 8K video from OneDrive on another device, the app will scale the video down to device's native resolution.
Samsung Motion Photos
Also, OneDrive for Android now supports Samsung Motion Photos which are regular images with a few additional seconds of video recorded. This feature is similar to Apple’s Live Photos.
Samsung Motion Photos will work only for OneDrive personal accounts. On top of that, it requires a compatible Samsung device. Unfortunately, you cannot play Samsung Motion Photos on OneDrive for iOS or OneDrive for Windows. Incompatible OneDrive clients will display a regular image without video or sound. Also, OneDrive currently does not support editing Motion Photos. If you try to rotate, crop, annotate, or add a filter to such a file, OneDrive will save it to a new image file without video or sound.
OneDrive for Android users now can also access the updated home page with three different sections. They include Recent files, Saved for offline access files, and the "On This Day" photo section. Previously, the new home page was available on iOS only.
