It looks like we are just days away from testing the new Outlook client for Windows. Known as "Project Monarch", it will replace the default Mail & Calendar apps, and works and looks identical everywhere.
Well-known enthusiast WalkingCat noticed that the new Outlook for Windows client has got a "PRE" (stands for PREVIEW) icon badge. It replaced the "BETA" icon it had for several months.
Also, the Microsoft configuration file changed the server URL from the internal version to the public version. The URL has been changed from https://outlook-sdf.office.com/mail/ to https://outlook.office.com/mail/.
Microsoft is expected to introduce the new app on April 5 as part of the 'Windows Powers the Future of Hybrid Work' event.
Technically, "Project Monarch" is a web application based on the Microsoft Edge WebView2 component. Microsoft's goal to unify Outlook desktop clients across all supported platforms. They will have the same code base and the same user interface. Web technologies will allow to get this done with minimal efforts.
Initially, the new Outlook app was expected to come along with Windows 11. But something went wrong. So now we should get it with Windows 11 version.
Sadly, there are not public preview builds of the new app. It is still tested internally. While it has its own page on the Store, it requires a special private account to download and install it. (via TheCommunity)
