Mozilla has announced that the infrastructure and catalog of add-ons for the Android version of Firefox are now ready. The company claims that the launch marks the first time when a mobile browser offers a full, open add-on ecosystem.
The initial plan to adapt about 200 add-ons for the Android version of Firefox was exceeded, with 489 add-ons available on the day the catalog was launched in early November. The ultimate goal is to support all add-ons available for Firefox in the addons.mozilla.org (AMO) directory on the mobile version of the browser.
To ensure the stability of the browser, Firefox for Android has added support for a multi-process mode, in which add-ons are executed in a separate process. Work is also ongoing to port missing APIs from the desktop version of Firefox to the Android version.
Developers of add-ons for the desktop version are encouraged to adapt and optimize their products for the mobile version, including transitioning from the constant background execution model to the event processing mode.
