On December 7, 2021, Mozilla released Firefox 95 with various improvements and optimizations. Besides, Firefox 95 arrived in the Microsoft Store, allowing Windows 10 and 11 users to get a popular alternative to mainstream Chromium without navigating to Firefox’s website
Unfortunately, Firefox 95 got off to a somewhat rocky start. Mozilla had to issue a minor update to fix crashes and errors when loading various microsoft.com domains. Also, users reported frequent crashes during Windows shutdowns. A couple days later, Mozilla issued another small update.
This time, version 95.0.2 is for users with old AMD hardware that cannot run Windows 10 or 11. Firefox 95.0.2 comes with a single item in the changelog:
- Addresses frequent crashes experienced by users with C/E/Z-Series “Bobcat” CPUs running on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1.
“Bobcat” is a CPU architecture that AMD debuted ten years ago. It consists of various single and dual-core CPUs with integrated Radeon graphics. The series splits between C, E, G, and Z CPU models, none of which support modern Windows versions.
AMD targeted the “Bobcat” architecture at low-power computers, such as inexpensive laptops, “netbooks,” and embedded devices with TDP varying from 4.5 to 18W.
It is good to see Mozilla providing support and fixing issues on devices with low-end old CPUs. Those using outdated laptops with AMD “Bobcat” CPUs can continue using Firefox to browse the Internet without crippling their aged and venerable hardware with Chromium-based browsers.
