Mozilla Discontinues Pocket and Fakespot Services

Mozilla has announced the discontinuation of its popular Pocket service. Effective immediately, the Pocket app and browser add-on have been removed from app stores, and new account registrations have been suspended. The service will officially shut down on July 8, 2025, after which unspent funds will be refunded to paying subscribers.

From that date, Pocket Web will transition to export-only mode, allowing users to retrieve their data. However, on October 8, 2025, the ability to export data will cease entirely, and all accounts and associated data will be permanently deleted.

About Pocket

Pocket, integrated into Firefox since version 38.0.5 (released in 2015), allowed users to save web pages for later viewing. Mozilla acquired the service in 2017 by purchasing Read It Later, the company behind Pocket.

Despite its popularity, Mozilla cited the service's inconsistency with modern online practices as a key reason for its closure. Resources previously allocated to Pocket will now be redirected to other projects that better align with users' evolving needs, such as Firefox's enhanced tab grouping and bookmarking systems, which provide built-in functionality for managing reading lists.

End of Fakespot

In addition to Pocket, Mozilla is also discontinuing the Fakespot browser add-on, a tool that uses machine learning to identify fake reviews, inflated ratings, fraudulent sellers, and misleading discounts on e-commerce platforms. The Fakespot website, mobile applications, and browser add-ons will cease operations on July 1, 2025. Furthermore, the Review Checker feature, powered by Fakespot and integrated into Firefox, will be disabled on June 10, 2025.

While the idea resonated, it didn’t fit a model we could sustain., Mozilla claimed.

Fakespot was developed by a company of the same name, which Mozilla acquired in 2023.

What This Means for Users

For Pocket users, it is crucial to export any saved data before October 8, 2025, to avoid permanent loss. Similarly, Fakespot users should prepare for the eventual shutdown by exploring alternative tools for identifying fraudulent online activities.
