Model Context Protocol (MCP) support announced for Windows 11

At the Build 2025 developer conference, Microsoft announced native support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) in Windows 11, making it easier to build apps and services that use agent-based AI technologies. MCP is an open standard designed to enable AI models to more effectively interact with data outside of specific apps or services. It facilitates the exchange of contextual information, allowing AI tools and agents to seamlessly use this data.

Key components of MCP for Windows 11

MCP Registry

The MCP Registry serves as a centralized, secure, and trusted source. It allows Windows AI agents to discover MCP servers installed on a device, access their capabilities, and deliver rich experiences to end users.

MCP Servers

These include core Windows system features such as file system management, window management, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). These features will now be available to AI agents as MCP servers, enabling deeper integration with the operating system.

The MCP platform in Windows 11 provides a standardized framework for connecting AI agents to native Windows apps. This framework extends the skills and capabilities of AI agents by giving them access to specific features in Windows apps.

Data privacy and security

Microsoft emphasizes that security and user data protection are top priorities when implementing MCP. The company is collaborating with leading developers, including Figma, Anthropic, and Perplexity, to integrate MCP into their solutions. Additionally, native Microsoft Windows app actions will leverage the MCP protocol in Windows 11, further enriching the ecosystem.

According to Pavan Davuluri, corporate vice president of Windows and devices at Microsoft, this achievement highlights Microsoft’s commitment to driving innovation while ensuring robust security and user privacy.

Microsoft's own Windows App Actions will also take advantage of the MCP protocol in Windows 11.
