Microsoft has recently announced a new round of layoffs, although the exact number of affected employees has not been specified. The cuts are expected to primarily impact workers in sales, education, support services, and the Microsoft Modern Work team.
“Organizational and workforce adjustments are a necessary and regular part of managing our business. We will continue to prioritize and invest in strategic growth areas for our future and in support of our customers and partners,”
a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement to GeekWire.
So the company has confirmed the layoffs but stated that they are a necessary part of running the business and that they will continue investing in strategic growth areas.
Microsoft has already applied to the WARN system in Washington state, indicating that 210 workers in Redmond and Bellevue offices and 66 remote employees will be affected. Employers in the US must notify WARN of cuts 60 days before taking action.
This follows previous rounds of layoffs in 2022 and early 2023, where approximately 11,000 jobs were eliminated. Microsoft has faced criticism from employees for not raising salaries and cutting bonuses despite significant profits. In total, Microsoft employs more than 200 thousand people.
