The Path to a New Design
Research and Creativity Unleashed
At the outset, the design team embraced boundless creativity. Concepts were sketched using tools like Figma, marker boards, and even pen and paper. Dozens of mockups were created, ranging from practical layouts to bold, experimental ideas. This exploratory phase ensured no stone was left unturned in reimagining the Start menu.
Testing with Real Users
To identify the most effective solutions, the team engaged over 300 Windows 11 enthusiasts in extensive research. Additional co-creation sessions brought in dozens more users to collaborate directly with developers. Advanced techniques such as heat maps, eye-tracking, mouse scroll analysis, and emotional feedback helped the team understand how users interacted with different designs.
Key Improvements in the Updated Start Menu
Based on user feedback and data insights, several meaningful enhancements have been implemented.
Flexible App Display
The All Apps list now appears at the top of the Start menu, offering three customizable views:
- Categories: Automatically sorts apps by type and usage frequency.
- Grid: Displays apps in a clean, organized layout.
- A-Z List: Maintains the familiar alphabetical order for easy navigation.
Smart Recommendations
The Start menu now provides personalized suggestions for files and apps, updated in real time. For those who prefer a cleaner interface, the Recommended section can be completely removed.
Customization Options
Users can still choose between More Pins, More Suggestions, or the Default layout to tailor the Start menu to their preferences.
Mobile Integration
A new "Phone Link" sidebar slides out from the right side of the Start menu, offering quick access to content from a connected smartphone. Whether it’s making calls, sending messages, or sharing files, this feature bridges the gap between mobile and desktop. Users who don’t need the panel can easily hide it with a single click.
Refinement Across Devices
Microsoft emphasizes that the updated Start menu has been rigorously tested on a wide variety of devices, ensuring a seamless experience for all users. From compact devices like the Surface Go to expansive 49-inch ultrawide monitors, the design adapts effortlessly to different screen sizes and resolutions.
A Glimpse into the Prototyping Phase
