Microsoft Moves Time Server Address Option from Control Panel to Settings

Microsoft continues to expand the Settings app with classic options. In Windows 11, the time server address configuration waves goodbye to the classic Control Panel and is getting a new home in Settings.

This setting, previously found under Control Panel > Clock and Region > Date and Time > Internet Time, allows users to specify a network time server used to synchronize the system clock automatically.

The option now appears under Settings > Time & Language > Date & Time.

The addition of classic options is proceeding at a rapid pace in Windows 11, demonstrating a priority to consolidate legacy settings into a single, intuitive interface. While this change is currently rolling out to Dev and Beta channel builds, it signals that the eventual removal of the Internet Time page from Control Panel is on the horizon.

What is Time Server Setting

The Time Server setting ensures accurate system time, especially for users who require synchronization with a specific regional or organizational time server.

By default, Windows uses Microsoft’s own time server (time.windows.com), but advanced users, IT administrators, and organizations often configure this to point to an internal or custom NTP (Network Time Protocol) server. This is specially important in environments where precise timekeeping is essential.

The New Location

As part of the transition, users can now access this and other related date and time options — such as time zone selection, automatic time sync, and display format settings — all within the same section in Settings.

This shift aligns with recent moves to bring mouse behavior settings, keyboard repeat rate, and logon page language-related configurations into the modern UI.

Closing words

With fewer and fewer options remaining exclusively in the Control Panel, Microsoft is turning Settings into the single Windows configuration tool for consumers. Moving the time server address option marks another step in that direction.
