Microsoft has begun rolling out a new initiative called Windows AI Labs within the Microsoft Paint application. The program invites select users to participate in early testing of upcoming artificial intelligence features.
Users must manually join the program. The interface appears as a registration prompt in Paint, requesting consent to test pre-release AI tools. Enrollment is currently unavailable to all users, with attempts to sign up returning system errors.

Purpose and Scope
The initiative is designed to collect user feedback on experimental AI capabilities before broader deployment. Documentation associated with the program states its goal is to enable ongoing evaluation of pre-release versions of Microsoft Paint, with participant input intended to shape final feature design.
Expansion to Other Apps
While Windows AI Labs is currently visible only in Paint, Microsoft recently introduced AI-powered functions in Notepad, including on-device text generation. So we can expect the program to extend to other core Windows applications in future updates.
This new initiative exists separately from the Windows Insider Program. Participation in Windows AI Labs does not require enrollment in any insider channel. and targets specific AI functionality rather than general OS updates.
Requirements
It remains unconfirmed whether features tested through this program will require devices equipped with a Neural Processing Unit (NPU), such as Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft has not revealed yet which AI capabilities are under evaluation or their system requirements.
The introduction of Windows AI Labs follows recent updates to Paint, including support for project files, and enhancements to Notepad with local AI generation tools. Microsoft yet to announce the changes.
