Microsoft is constantly experimenting with new features and capabilities to see what sticks to the wall and what does not. A new sidebar is the latest experiment available to some Edge Insiders in the Canary channel.
Benjamin Mathis (@BenjMathis1) has shared a number of screenshots detailing how the new toolbar works in Edge Canary.
The right sidebar feature in Microsoft Edge
The new sidebar in Microsoft Edge appears at the right side of the browser's window, and it gives access to several tools you may find helpful. In its current version, the toolbar offers five buttons: Discover, Microsoft Rewards, Internet speed test, built-in games, and Office.
- The Discover tab provides insights about the currently open page and related stories.
- Microsoft Rewards shows your points and the ways you can spend them.
- The Internet speed test tab is self-explanatory,
- and the Games tab let you play several built-in games Microsoft recently introduced.
- Finally, you can create new documents on the Office tab using Office Online.
Microsoft understands that not everyone will like the new toolbar, so the company provides an option to turn it off. Also, there is a feedback button for the users to share their thoughts about the new feature.
It will be interesting to see Microsoft implementing a new sidebar in the Edge browser, especially considering that it also wants to allow users to move vertical tabs to the right.
The new sidebar in Microsoft Edge is currently available only to a subset of Edge Insiders in the Canary channel. Unfortunately, not everyone with the latest build can test the feature.
What everyone can test is a new flag that lets you set the Edge version to 100. Microsoft recently introduced that option to see how three-digit versions will affect the browsing experience.
