Microsoft is building a team to create small cheap AI models

Microsoft is doing advanced efforts to expand its presence in the AI market by developing smaller and more affordable models. To oversee these initiatives, the company is establishing a dedicated team.

The newly formed generative AI team will concentrate on creating small language models (SLMs) akin to OpenAI's GPT-4, but optimized for lower computing power and operational costs.

Leading the GenAI team will be Microsoft Corporate Vice President Misha Bilenko. It will be part of the Azure cloud division. Additionally, the company has reassigned several senior AI developers from its research group to support this effort.

Microsoft had previously unveiled the Phi-2 model, which features approximately 3 billion parameters and is reportedly superior to larger-scale projects. Experts praised the model's performance that Microsoft managed to achieve with high-quality data sets on which it was trained.
