Microsoft has released out-of-band updates to fix Windows Recovery options

Microsoft has released out-of-band patches for some supported versions of Windows 11 and Windows 10. They address an issue that caused operating system's recovery functions, such as reset and restore, fail after installing the August 2025 Patch Tuesday updates. Here's how Microsoft describes the issue.

[Fix for reset and recovery issue] This update addresses an issue introduced by the August 2025 security update (KB5063874), in which attempts to reset or recover the device might fail. This issue happens when users perform one or more of the following four processes:

  • System > Recovery > Reset my PC
  • System Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update
  • RemoteWipe CSP

After installing cumulative patches, users see an error when trying to use the "Reset this PC" feature while keeping files, as well as when using the "Fix problems with Windows Update" tool.

Released out-of-band updates resolve the issue. You can get them in form of optional updates in Settings > Windows Update and/or Windows Update for Business. Check them out.
