Microsoft Gradually Gets Rid of Rounded UI in Edge Chromium

Edge Canary Icon 256

As you may already know, Microsoft is currently working on a new version of the Edge browser. It is a version that shares almost nothing common besides the name with the UWP/Metro Edge browser. The new Edge app is a Chromium-based browser, with extra features added by Microsoft, like Bing Translator, Microsoft Account, and a few of Microsoft's very own features like Read Aloud, Reading View tweaks, and more.

In recent Canary builds of Edge, the Redmond software giant is revamping the appearance of the user interface of the browser. It looks like the company is getting rid of the rounder controls by replacing them with slightly rounder, almost square corners, which actually goes well with the overall look of Windows 10.

The change affects the address bar, which now looks like a box without rounded corners.

Also, there is a new InPrivate mode indicator.

Finally, the shadow of the profile icon now has a square shape.

Definitely, these changes are minor, but they are showing the direction Microsoft takes with their new browser.

As you may already know, Microsoft is currently using three channels to deliver updates to Edge Insiders. The Canary channel receives updates daily (except Saturday and Sunday), the Dev channel is getting updates weekly, and the Beta channel is updated every 6 weeks. The stable channel is also on its way to users.

  1. It will be interesting to see what it finally will look like. I have the beta on my Win10 Insider machine, BTW, currently a former spare Gigabyte H61board that was cheap but I never used it in 7 years. It got a Pentium G860 with 4 GB of RAM. It’s truly horrible performance, but definitely off topic, so I do apologize. ;-)
