Microsoft finally offers Recall with Click to Do on Copilot+ PCs in the Dev channel

Microsoft releases Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.2415 (KB5046723) to the Dev Channel with several Copilot improvements and new capabilities. Also, Insiders who own Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs  can try out Recall (Preview) with Click to Do (Preview).

New Copilot+ PC experiences

Preview of Recall

Microsoft is introducing a preview of Recall to Windows Insiders. Recall is an innovative way to quickly and securely find things you’ve seen or done on your PC. Powered by Copilot+ AI, you can now easily return to any app, website, image, or document by simply describing its contents.

We invite you to try Recall and share your experiences, report issues, and suggest improvements using the links on the site or in the Feedback Hub. Microsoft thanks the researchers and security experts who contributed to Recall. If you are one of these Insiders, we would love to hear your feedback on Recall’s new security and privacy architecture by participating in the Bug Bounty Program as part of the Windows Insider Preview.

It is important to note that there are various issues that may occur when using Recall. At the bottom of this article you will find information about known errors and issues. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with them before using it.

Installation

After installing this build, models for Recall and Click to Do will be downloaded in the background. You can track the download progress in Settings > Windows Update. You can launch Recall from the All apps list in the Start menu.

When you first launch Recall, you'll be prompted to enable snapshots. You'll also need to sign up for Windows Hello to verify your presence. This requires that you enable BitLocker and Secure Boot if they aren't already enabled. If you don't enable snapshots, Recall won't be able to create a history of your actions.

Search

Use your computer as you normally would. Whenever you need to find something you did earlier, open Recall and sign in with Windows Hello. Throughout the day, we use our computers to work on documents or presentations, take video calls, and contextually switch between activities. Recall helps you quickly find the apps, websites, images, or documents you need when you can’t remember something.

Use search suggestions to find what you're looking for. You can type text you remember or describe what you're looking for (e.g., "pie chart"). You can also browse the snapshot timeline to find the time you need and quickly return to the relevant document or website.

Recall uses artificial intelligence to search for text and visual matches to your query. AI can make mistakes, so if the search results are inaccurate, please report it via the feedback form.

Once you find the item you want, you can return to the app, website, or document, and use Click to Do to work with any image or text in the photo. You can read more about using Recall on the support page.

Control

You have full control over how you save your captures in Recall. A new system tray icon displays the status of Recall and provides quick access to control the feature.

An active Recall feature is indicated by an icon in the tray, a visual reminder that photos are being processed and saved. Click the icon to pause saving or get detailed status information. The paused state is indicated by an icon with a slash through it.

Recall lets you delete any unwanted capture. What's more, you can tell Recall to ignore the app or website captured in that screenshot in the future. You can do this either when viewing a specific screenshot or by searching for and deleting the relevant results.

Your details

Your data is yours alone. The images you create are not sent to Microsoft, third parties, or used by Microsoft to train AI models. Microsoft does not have access to the keys to decrypt your data, so we cannot restore your images if you uninstall Windows Hello, reset your system, or move to a new PC.

Future updates will include the ability to back up keys for such cases. Currently, PC Copilot+ only allows Recall to access keys after authentication via face, fingerprint, or PIN. Please note that during the testing phase, updates may be released that require deletion of all saved photos. If this is necessary, Microsoft will provide additional information.

Technical experts can find more detailed information about Recall's security and privacy architecture at this link.

Confidentiality

Recall can now recognize sensitive information such as credit card numbers, passwords, and national ID numbers. If such data is detected, Recall will not save the corresponding snapshot.

We're continually improving this feature. If you've encountered a situation where sensitive information isn't filtered based on your context, language, or region, please report it to Feedback Hub.

There is a recommended option in the settings to anonymously send data about apps and sites that you want to exclude from Recall. This information will help us improve the product. Additionally, you can exclude specific apps and sites on the Recall settings page.

Settings

You can customize Recall to your needs with additional settings. Recall requires authentication via Windows Hello to change settings. You can turn off snapshots, temporarily pause the feature, filter apps and websites in supported browsers, control disk space usage, and delete snapshots in Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots.

The developers would love to hear feedback on what additional settings could improve the feature.

To completely remove Recall, use the search on the taskbar and type "Turn Windows features on or off." In the window that opens, uncheck the Recall feature and restart your computer.

Enterprise environment

As announced at Ignite, Recall is now disabled by default on managed PCs (work or school) and on enterprise editions of Windows 11. IT administrators have full control over whether Recall is available in an organization. To save snapshots, employees must manually enable the feature and sign up for Windows Hello for face or fingerprint authentication. Only an authorized user can access and decrypt Recall data. This means that an organization will not be able to access employee snapshots, but an IT administrator can disable Recall entirely or block snapshots from being saved from specific apps and sites. For more information on managing Recall on Copilot+ PCs in an organization, see the documentation.

Availability

The preview of Recall is rolling out to Snapdragon-based Copilot+ PC devices first, with support for AMD and Intel-based Copilot+ PC devices coming soon. Because Recall is in testing and rolling out gradually, it supports a limited number of languages, including Chinese (Simplified), English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. There are also content and storage limitations. For more information, click here. Recall is not available in all regions, but will be available in more countries over time.

Click to Do Preview in Recall

Click to Do in Recall is designed to boost your productivity and unleash your creativity when working with screenshots. Click to Do uses AI to analyze text and images in your screenshots, then suggests relevant actions to help you complete tasks in real time. For example, it can quickly redirect you to the most appropriate app to complete a task in the best possible way.

Changes and improvements

Windows Hello

    • The updated Windows Hello UI, which is rolling out to Insiders in the Beta and  Canary channels , will soon be available in the Dev channel.

Narrator

    • Narrator Scan Mode has been improved. The Skip Links ( N) feature allows you to jump to the text following a link. This is especially useful when reviewing long emails, news articles, and wiki pages. The Jump to Lists ( L) feature provides quick access to lists on a web page or document. To use Scan Mode, you must first turn on Narrator.

Speech in Windows

    • Improved speech-to-text and text-to-speech capabilities. Narrator, Voice Access, Live Captions, Live Translation, and Voice Typing users may see a message asking them to manually update their language files. These language files will be available for download in the Microsoft Store.

Fixes

Taskbar and system tray

    • Fixed an issue that caused explorer.exe to crash when interacting with application icons on the taskbar.

Desktop

    • Fixed an issue where the desktop background could sometimes display incorrectly on multiple monitors, with large black areas appearing.

File Explorer

    • Some changes have been made so that the search field in Explorer no longer extends beyond the window borders.

Input

    • Fixed an issue where the scroll wheel did not work on some devices.

Narrator

    • Fixed an issue that caused Narrator to crash when launched if one of the natural voices (e.g. Jenny) was used.

Known issues

Recall with Click to Do

    • In order for Recall to save screenshots, Secure Boot must be enabled. Before testing Recall, make sure Secure Boot is enabled. Instructions for enabling it can be found on the support page.
    • When submitting reviews using links in Recall, you may experience a delay in opening the Feedback Hub.
    • Recall can be enabled or disabled in the "Turn Windows features on or off" section. At the moment, Recall files remain on the disk even after the feature is disabled. In future updates, these files will be completely removed from the system.
    • Sometimes there may be a delay before the photos appear on the timeline. If the photos do not appear after 5 minutes, restart your device. Restarting your device may also resolve the issue where photos stop saving despite the feature being enabled.
    • If you see the message "Make sure Recall is saving snapshots" even though snapshot saving is enabled in Settings, restart your device.
    • Websites added to filters may be saved in snapshots if their content is displayed in split-screen mode or the Edge sidebar. This issue will be fixed in future updates.
    • Be sure to update your Microsoft 365 apps to the latest version so you can get back to certain documents.
    • Recall may not currently work with some accessibility apps.
