Microsoft Extends Free Edge Support on Windows 10 Through 2028

Microsoft has confirmed that Microsoft Edge and the WebView2 Runtime will receive ongoing updates for Windows 10 users through at least October 2028. This support extends beyond the end of Windows 10’s standard lifecycle, which concludes in October 2025.

Edge Support Till 2028

The company stated in a support document that these updates will include security fixes, performance improvements, and new features. Importantly, participation in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program is not required to receive these updates. All Windows 10 22H2 users, regardless of ESU enrollment, will continue to get browser and runtime updates.

This commitment fits Microsoft’s support timeline for Windows 10. The operating system will remain eligible for paid security updates until October 2028 under the ESU program. As a result, key components like Edge and WebView2 are maintained to ensure continued functionality across the platform.

Other major browsers, including Google Chrome, Firefox, and Opera, are also expected to maintain full compatibility with Windows 10 into 2026 and beyond. However, Microsoft’s support for Office on Windows 10 differs. New features will cease in August 2026, though security updates will continue until 2028.

Microsoft has not ruled out extending Edge support past 2028 should circumstances require it. Nonetheless, October 2028 remains the current endpoint for official updates.

While systems may continue functioning after October 2025 without security patches, long-term use carries risks. Unsupported software and drivers may eventually stop working, and unpatched vulnerabilities could expose devices to threats. Users relying on Windows 10 for sensitive data should consider ESU or migration to Windows 11.

Support details are available on the official Microsoft Edge support lifecycle page.
