Microsoft expands Click to Do with App Actions on Windows 11

Microsoft has announced the introduction of App Actions on Windows, a new AI capability that can boost app engagement and increase feature discoverability. It solves one of the main problems facing developers - to tell the user what the application can do without interrupting their workflow. App Actions allow applications to contextually integrate into the operating system interface.

With App Actions, developers can create tailored actions that highlight specific features of their apps, making it easier for users to discover and use them in everyday workflows. For example, a productivity app could allow users to quickly add tasks from any screen, or a creative tool might let users edit images without leaving their current workspace.

Initially, App Actions will appear in the Click to Do interface when you right-click on the screen. Depending on what's currently on the user's screen, Windows will contextually suggest relevant tasks.

Click To Do New Reading Text Actions

Early adopters of this technology include popular apps across productivity, creativity, and communication sectors, such as Zoom, Filmora, Goodnotes, Todoist, Raycast, Pieces for Developers, and Spark Mail. These industry leaders are already leveraging App Actions to drive deeper engagement and expand their user base.

Key Features for Developers

App Actions APIs

Developers can use the App Actions APIs to define actions for their app’s most valuable features. Additionally, they can integrate actions developed by other apps to provide complementary functionality, creating richer, more engaging experiences within their own apps. These APIs are available starting with Windows SDK 10.0.26100.4188 or later.

App Actions Testing Playground

To ensure seamless functionality and an optimal user experience, developers can test their App Actions using the App Actions Testing Playground. This tool is now available for download via the Microsoft Store, providing a streamlined way to refine and perfect app integrations.

By enabling apps to surface their features across new contexts and user workflows, App Actions not only enhances app discoverability but also fosters greater user retention.
